In which I speak broadcaster Mandarin and some Beijing dialect (北京话). I have no Chinese ancestry and was not raised in China. Began learning at age 18. Total study time? Approximately 2.5 years: 1.5 non-intensively in the US and 1 in China. How did I get to this level? Spent a truly massive amount of time spent studying — during my one year in China, I rote-memorized literally thousands of words and characters, spoke nothing but Chinese for days on end, listened to nothing but Chinese music and watched nothing but Chinese television, and hung out exclusively with Chinese people. I do believe I have a talent for learning languages, but there’s no way I could have attained fluency without studying my butt off. The result? The 帅哥you see in this video. You can read it here if you’d like: cpc.people.com.cn Or the Google Translate version: tinyurl.com To the naysayers, I am indeed technically reading here rather than speaking, but can you really watch this video (and the others I link to) and believe that I can’t speak Chinese? If I were a betting man… 😉
